Monthly:February 2023
WONDER CAVES 27 February 2023 This was my second foray in the Mountain Lagoon area. Although I had to get up at an uncivilised hour, this remote area has a few gems to offer. Yuri had published his report on the Wonder Caves and my appetite was whetted! The caves and a neighbouring cave did not disappoint: colours, shapes, textures were a feast to the eye!We left the caves with regret but a swim in a pool and lunch were […]
CRAYFISH CREEK 25 February 2023 After the recce of February 01, we re-visited Crayfish Creek. The water levels were still high. The two deep wades were welcomed on a hot day!
GALAH CANYON 23 February 2023 Galah is a lovely albeit short canyon. We were prepared for a long day and it was indeed. The 2019-20 fires and subsequent floods damaged the creek section: lots of climbing, avoiding and burrowing… Once in the “canyoniferous” section, Galah Canyon worked its magic and all the hard work getting there was forgotten!
HAT HILL CANYON 20 February 2023 Old logs have gone, log jams have appeared after the storms from the last three years. Still a lovely little creek to visit on a hot day!
GANG GANG CREEK 18 February 2023 Yuri wanted to revisit this area after the approval of the extension of the Springvale Coal Mine in 2015. The area we were to visit has a working mine below! Gang Gang Canyon is really a creek and a scrubby one after the 2019-20 fires. We visited Gang Gang Caves. The tunnels were fun. The goal was Gang Gang Falls. After three years of rain, the falls did not have a lot of water. […]
UPPER BOWENS CREEK 12 February 2023 Upper Bowens Creek is a walk-through creek with some canyon sections and some swims. However a surprise awaited us early on: one of the climb-down relied on a log which has now disappeared. It was not safe to use a handline so we resorted to abseiling the drop. Needless to say this took time… There is a way around but it was too late to try it… We still enjoyed ourselves but had to […]
BIRRABANG BROOK DRAFT FEB 02 11 February 2023 Birrabang Brook was substituted for a walk in Kanangra due to poor weather. So off for a second visit in less than two weeks. We entered the creek earlier than the “usual” entrance. Nothing outstanding to report! We encountered a couple at the Wotta Canyon exit but apart from this, nobody! A pleasant day with friends!
GERONIMO CANYON 7 February 2023 The weather forecast promised a hot day. It had been several years since I had been to Geronimo Canyon so it seemed like a good idea although I was not looking forward to two steep climbs! After an uneventful descent to the Wollangambe and a climb through the cliff line, we were soon in the coolness of the canyon. Although not very long, it is a lovely canyon and we took our time admiring the […]
TOOTIE CASCADES 6 February 2023 Although the walk was only about 8 km in length, the number of climbs and descents, the slippery dry leaves and a sunny 30° day made it a challenging day! Thanks to the Bushwalking Gods for the cool waters of the creek! The views and the Cascades were the highlight of the trip!
CRAYFISH CREEK 1 February 2023 A recce for a club walk. We were looking for an easier exit than the “regular” one. Compared to my last visit two years ago, the creek had a lot of water with two unavoidable chest-deep sections. Crayfish still abound… A nice little creek with a short constriction!
