The rain and storms of the last few years were not kind to the creek: logs, debris, impenetrable scrub made our progress slow! We spent several minutes deciphering old graffiti dating back to 1949 on an overhang. As we continued on the scrub gave way to a forest of coachwoods. We soon arrived to a waterfall and […]

An Heroic Journey https://www.wildbluemountains.com/2024/01/blue-mountains-bowens-creek-to-waterfall-creek/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 18:13:00 +0000 https://www.wildbluemountains.com/?p=25187 An Heroic Journey 13 January 2024 When I heard Waterfall Creek, I just said Yes! I can’t resist a creek and a waterfall… A look at the map: it is going to be a long day: eight hours should do it! We were soon at Bowens Creek after descending through the Gobsmacker exit. The water level was higher than usual: we decided to continue. We soon were at the point of no return: a jump and we were committed! Bowens […]

A Nice Creek https://www.wildbluemountains.com/2023/12/blue-mountains-unpublished-canyon-202312/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 18:13:00 +0000 https://www.wildbluemountains.com/?p=25130 A Nice Creek 30 December 2023 It was a grey day perfect for photography! Six brave souls set out along the bed of a creek. I dutifully gave a blood offering to the canyoning gods: I don’t think I can do a canyon without falling at least once!Everything was slippery: the leaves, the ground, the rocks… but it was nice being there. I had walked there before and had been stopped by a drop! So I was looking forward to […]

Dug’s Canyon https://www.wildbluemountains.com/2023/12/blue-mountains-dugs-canyon/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 18:13:00 +0000 https://www.wildbluemountains.com/?p=25114 Dug’s Canyon 6 December 2023 This slot canyon was advertised recently online although its location has not been revealed, for the time being! The background on the canyon can be found on Adventures with M. Three abseils in short succession, all with “challenging” starts. The second abseil is the “pièce de résistance”: a descent in a dark slot lined with a few ferns! This was quite a treat!

Avoiding Getting Wet In A Wet Canyon https://www.wildbluemountains.com/2023/11/blue-mountains-unpublished-canyon-sc/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 18:13:00 +0000 https://www.wildbluemountains.com/?p=24819 AVOIDING GETTING WET IN A CANYON 17 November 2023 This unpublished but well-known canyon had been on my to-do list for a long time but things got in the way! It has swims/deep wades and neither Kevin and I were keen on getting wet on a cool gray day or anytime for that matter.. but the decision was made! So we set off map in hand and soon enough we were in the headwaters of the creek. The first abseil […]

After setting the anchor around a boulder and taking pains to manage the edge, we were off the first abseil, a 60’ish m affair with a bend. While waiting at the bottom. I decided to eat the banana that was stored in my backpack. What followed was a discussion on the merits of […]
