A Tale Of Two Canyons

A Tale Of Two Canyons

I joined the group of usual suspects I canyon occasionally with for two unpublished canyons/creeks in the Blue Mountains.

After setting the anchor around a boulder and taking pains to manage the edge, we were off the first abseil, a 60’ish m affair with a bend. While waiting at the bottom. I decided to eat the banana that was stored in my backpack. What followed was a discussion on the merits of taking bananas while canyoning – in a nutshell, yes you can but you need to eat them early! I christened the canyon, Banana Canyon!
The second abseil had a small surprise: the ropes went through a hole! We followed the creek and were soon on the beaten tracks.

We relocated to reach another spur where the second canyon was waiting. The creek had been descended before as evidenced by the presence of a sling. The first abseil finished in a cavern. The second abseil was small and awkward! A long root was following the water. A substantial root was present on the third abseil and I privately nicknamed this canyon, Long Roots Canyon!

The fourth abseil saw the group divides itself into two entities: those who did not want to get wet and those who were ready to take a chance! The abseil had two deep pools but they could be negotiated without taking a plunge!
We followed the creek back to track and made it back to the cars!

Two fun canyons of medium quality: no constrictions, just a nice day out!
