WILD BLUE MOUNTAINS
BIRRABANG BROOK DRAFT FEB 02 11 February 2023 Birrabang Brook was substituted for a walk in Kanangra due to poor weather. So off for a second visit in less than two weeks. We entered the creek earlier than the “usual” entrance. Nothing outstanding to report! We encountered a couple at the Wotta Canyon exit but apart from this, nobody! A pleasant day with friends!
GERONIMO CANYON 7 February 2023 The weather forecast promised a hot day. It had been several years since I had been to Geronimo Canyon so it seemed like a good idea although I was not looking forward to two steep climbs! After an uneventful descent to the Wollangambe and a climb through the cliff line, we were soon in the coolness of the canyon. Although not very long, it is a lovely canyon and we took our time admiring the […]
TOOTIE CASCADES 6 February 2023 Although the walk was only about 8 km in length, the number of climbs and descents, the slippery dry leaves and a sunny 30° day made it a challenging day! Thanks to the Bushwalking Gods for the cool waters of the creek! The views and the Cascades were the highlight of the trip!
CRAYFISH CREEK 1 February 2023 A recce for a club walk. We were looking for an easier exit than the “regular” one. Compared to my last visit two years ago, the creek had a lot of water with two unavoidable chest-deep sections. Crayfish still abound… A nice little creek with a short constriction!
BIRRABANG BROOK DRAFT JAN 28 January 2023 Birrabang Brook or Birrabang Canyon is a creek on the south side of the Bells Line of Road. This pretty creek has some nice canyon sections. The 2019-20 fires and three years of La Nina have contributed to some log jams that can be avoided by choosing the right way! The water level was higher than the last time I went there: I had to almost swim in two sections. A lovely day […]
SHEEP DIP CANYON 24 January 2023 Sheep Dip, also known as Death Trap, is a small canyon in the headwaters of Rocky Creek. It was a hot day and spending several hours in the water seemed like a good idea. The original fire trail was overgrown after the fires but this did not prevent Kent to drive those lazy canyoners closer to the start of the track! Sheep Dip is a fun little canyon/creek with lots of slides, pools and […]
WOLLANGAMBE ONE 3 January 2023 The Wollangambe River is always a fun trip in summer but it is not my favourite creek to walk/swim along! The cliffs are amazing but I prefer a bit of variety in the scenery … Wollangambe One (upper section) has longer swims and more scrambling than Wollangambe Two (lower section). Since I do not have a lilo – can’t be bothered with them – I paddle around and end up ravenous! The day was gorgeous […]
ELEVATION DIFFERENCE AND ELEVATION GAIN 1 October 2022 The difference between an easy or difficult bushwalk! SOME DEFINITIONS TOTAL DISTANCE This is the distance from start to finish whether the walk is out and back or a loop! ELEVATION This one is easy: elevation is the height of a point above sea level. HEIGHT Height is the vertical distance of a point to a horizontal surface. for instance the base of a mountain. It usually refers to a feature such […]
