Marijuana Canyon Cleanup

Marijuana Canyon Cleanup

Remote, yet accessible, the Blue Mountains have always been a place of choice for marginal agricultural endeavours – namely the cultivation of cannabis aka marijuana.

The upper reaches of Marijuana Canyon is home to an abandoned cannabis plantation. The elaborate setup comprising terraces, irrigation system and a small dam suggest that this was a successful enterprise. I don’t think they were growing it for medicinal or scientific purposes!

Marilyn had been wanting to clean up the area as pieces of plastic were making their way into the creek network. Seven hardy souls armed with gloves and garbage bags made their way down to the derelict plantation. Very soon the plastic sheeting and mesh were removed from the dam walls and squeezed into garbage bags.  The lining at the bottom of the dam was in good shape and buried under soil and water.

We then climbed back up with full garbage bags to dispose of them properly. All in all a satisfying day!
