Upper Wollangambe River

I had thought to put this walk on the club program but I got beaten to it so I joined the walk. On my last visit to the Upper Wollangambe years ago it had been cold; I walked as fast as I could: it was all a blur! Today it was going to be hot!

On our way we came across a couple in shorts carrying nothing more than their phones and a bottle between them. They were going to the Crater – the Wollangmabe one it turned out – and were going the wrong way (we told them). They saw us changing by the Gambe. We guided them and they found their way down. They sat at a spot nearby; once in their swimsuit, the Instagram session started. I wondered if I would be called for a search in the area the next day…

The water levels were low but there were still some sections requiring a swim. The water was clear and had its ice-blue trademark colour in some areas. The creek has a few “canyony” sections but most of it was either a gorge or a forest. It is more varied than Wollangambe One and Two as far as the landscape go! We saw the odd yabbie suggesting that the river is doing better. However a brown bio-layer covered the rocks underwater probably be due to mine wastewater discharges from the Clarence Colliery into the Wollangambe River.

 All in a all a good day and this time I was not cold!
