Kenny Street Hazard Reduction

This hazard reduction was part two of a strategy to protect the southwestern side of Mount Victoria. A small area – about 5 hectares –  with houses to the east and a cliff line to the west. It was over-resourced but the fear was that the fire could endanger the houses (many of them ill-prepared) or fall over the cliff line and find its way to Kanimbla Valley. None of that happened! 

I was not attached to any truck. The containment line was good – we just had to remove a tree that was linking the area to be burnt to the area that should not burn! The crews started to burn along the little zig zag track at about 12:20. This was good practice for the many newly-minted firefighters. 

I got dispatched as a lookout to the bottom of a gully to check the fire behaviour: the fire was creeping down nicely and slowly. Kangaroos were surprised and confused but made it out safely! Eventually the area was burnt and mopping up started. By 16:30 the fireground was in a good shape and we were released.
